These books were given as gifts to sons who love to camp and they seem to enjoy them, one son especially loves to camp along the coast and looked forward to using the book.
I am a native Californian and am familiar with some of the places described. Besides being well written, this book is a must for anyone camping, hiking, kayaking, and traveling by car along the California Central and North Coasts. The writer draws on his own experience and gives helpful reflections on little known coves, towns, brew pubs, hiking trails, and places to stay, surf, or camp along the coast. The book is well written, includes photos, and will provide the reader with a treasure trove of information to enhance any car trip along the California Coast.
The voice of the author is authentic and true. He has clearly explored every inch, every crevice, every mile along the California coast. With depth, detail and sensitivity he describes the journey. Personally, I can't wait to get out there and see it for myself. I have spent more than my fair share of time traversing the coast of California, but Meade has provided new insight -- I feel as if I have never seen this coast before. A more bohemian style of writing, I love the natural ebb and flow; clearly genuine in his quest to be one with his subject. A favorite passage describes a stormy night spent truck camping along the Central Coast. I could feel the moment and hope to experience such bliss one day.
I am a lover of water. Anywhere near water and I am happy. But especially the sea. The big pond. The vast expanse of H20 and sodium chloride. Meade's latest book, With the Sea Beside, has me smelling salt air and dreaming of my next great California coastal odyssey.
An outstanding travel guide for the adventurer. I thought that I was familiar with most of the central and north coast of California, but reading Mr. Fischer's book evoked a frequent "Wow! I didn't know about that place." A copy will travel with me.
As the author moves along the coast he highlights special hiking, surfing, and kayaking places, with a description of what makes them special. And he adds other useful information for the traveler where obscure trailheads are found, where to camp or take lodging, local cafes and small restaurants, brewpubs, and sites of special interest. To cap it off, each area is introduced with a photo.
The reader is in the good hands of a man who knows the coast intimately, and who shares his knowledge. This well written book will enhance your traveling experience.
